Aim of the course:
This unit provides youth workers with tools and methodologies to teach young migrant women about the role of Community Gardens as drivers for social inclusion, community activism, local sustainability and income generation opportunities.
The objective of this unit is to enable youth workers to teach young migrant women how they can be empowered, contribute to local sustainability and generate income by engaging in Community Gardens activities.
Main notions:
- Community Gardens can be understood as empowering social spaces where young migrant women are not positioned as beneficiaries of support, but as active contributors, decision-makers, and community actors.
- The educator’s role is to create supportive conditions, encourage participation, and gradually transfer responsibility to the group by valuing women’s voices, respecting their pace, and allowing space for experimentation and mistakes.
- It is important to connect practical gardening activities with reflection to support deeper learning and long-term behavior change.
- Community gardens can be an income generation source young migrant women that often starts small and grows gradually
- Community gardens can serve as dynamic platforms for young migrant women to explore and develop income-generating opportunities. It’s important to identify income options that align with their skills, interests, cultural background, time availability, and long-term goals (not every activity is equally suitable for every participant).
- Community gardens improve diets (and therefore human health).
- Flowers and plants not only attract pollinating insects and insects that protect against pests but also beautify the garden and attract the attention of more people, increasing visibility.
